Curriculum Night: I'm looking forward to seeing all of you during Curriculum Night, August 31st.Curriculum Night is an opportunity to learn more about what your child will learn this year! This is an adult only event. I hope to see you there!

Reading: This week we will learn that people read differently when they write about their reading. Then, we will learn that once readers settle on an idea about a text worth developing, they think, “Where does this idea live in the text?” Mid week, we will learn that when we start a new book we try to figure out who the narrator is and continue to keep in mind whose perspective we are hearing. We will wrap up the week by learning to think analytically.
Reading Homework: Be on the lookout for a page to guide students thinking about their reading each night. Also, please encourage your child to fill out their reading log in their green “Reading Life Folder” each night. It is important that the "Reading Life Folder" goes home and comes back to school each night. Reading logs are an important data collection tool. We will use them to reflect on our reading habits and set new goals based on our noticings. I appreciate your efforts to help your 5th grader make a growth spurt as a reader this year!
Writing: This week we will learn that when writing personal narratives, it is important to put yourself inside the skin of the main character. On Tuesday, I will remind students that it helps to pause sometimes and to look back on our progress as writers, asking,”Am I getting better?” and also asking, “What should I work on next?” Mid-week, we will take time to discuss our stamina as writers. I will encourage students to draft an entire story in one writing session! We will wrap up our week by spending time discussing the importance of revision.
Math: In math, we will begin learning about the structure of math workshop, while simultaneously diving into our Understand Place Value Unit. In lesson 1-1, students use patterns and positive exponents to write and interpret products involving powers of 10. Lesson 1-2 students will learn that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left. Finally, in lesson 1-3, we will learn how to read and write whole numbers.
Check out these writers storytelling with their partners in a step-by-step way!

Social Studies:This week in Social Studies we will learn that banks and other financial institutions play an important role in the operation of an economy. People and businesses deposit money in banks; buy goods, services, and resources using their bank accounts; borrow money from banks for goods or services they need or want; and earn interest by putting money in savings accounts. Take some time explain credit cards, debit cards, checking accounts, and savings accounts with your 5th grader! Let them in on the importance of managing money responsibly!
