Jog Jam: The Jog Jam will happen this Thursday during PE. Please send your child in comfortable clothes and shoes.
Fall Conference Night: Highcroft's Fall Conference Night is October 5th, from 4:30-8:00 pm. We will once again use an online system to schedule conference meetings. This system, called MyConferenceTime, will allow you to schedule your conference with your student’s teacher without having to send in any forms. It will also email you a reminder of your time a few days before. There are a few easy steps to register for your conference. If you have one child at Highcroft Ridge:
- Click your child’s teacher from the list of teachers.
- Choose your preferred conference time from the list of available conferences and click “Sign Up” under your preferred time.
- Fill in all required information and any necessary optional information and click “Sign Up for Your Conference.” Please be assured that all information is submitted securely and will only be used by the school for confirmation purposes. It will not be available to outside sources.
- You will receive a confirmation email confirming your conference time.
Reading: In the third and final bend, students will study the ways in which a theme can be developed differently in different texts. Students will learn that one way readers think about theme in more complex ways is to consider how different characters connect to and represent that theme, and also how some characters may work against a theme. We will also think about the choices that authors make (and the ones they don’t), as a way to come to new insights about texts. Our last lesson, will delve deeper into literary analysis. Thursday we will show all that we have learned during an assessment and finally, on Friday, we will reflect on our first unit with a celebration! :)
Read Aloud: Home of the Brave
Writing: During Bend III, the last part of this unit, students will begin a 3rd personal narrative. Students will develop their skills at analyzing and annotating mentor texts and emulating the craft moves of a published author. As they do this, I will remind them of what they were taught earlier in the unit--the importance of dramatizing a scene to capture the unfolding experience on the page. Children will have much to draw on from their first round of writing and will continue to self evaluate and set goals as they move forward.
Math: This week starts Unit 2 in math! Unit 2 covers a variety of topics and will last through November. The first topic we will focus on is fluently multiplying multi-digit numbers. Students will focus on using place value understandings and patterns to mentally multiply whole numbers and powers of 10. Then, we will learn how to use rounding and compatible numbers to estimate products. Finally, we will spend a few days using the array method, partial products and the standard algorithm to multiply 3-digit by 2-digit numbers.
Important Math Words: Underestimate, Overestimate, partial products, array method, standard algorithm
Social Studies:This week in Social Studies, students will continue to learn about rights and privileges granted to all members of society. They will be able to earn and spend money, open a savings account, go to work, and take a break from working. This will help students understand their place in an economy.
Science: This week in science, students will continue to present their Google Slides presentations on different types of Ecosystems. Students will also compare their schoolyard ecosystem with pond, forest, and prairie ecosystems.
