I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing and safe Labor Day Weekend! Here's what's happening in Room 502 this week!

Late Start Wednesday: The first 2-hour Late Start in Parkway is this Wednesday, September 6. School will start 2 hours later than usual and buses will pick up 2 hours later. Late Start Days are designed to allow teachers to collaborate in Professional Learning Communities and commit to helping every child be more successful in school.

Reading: This week in reading, we will launch our Interpretation Book Clubs. Readers will sharpen their reading and thinking skills by developing eyes to not only see more in a text, but to make more significance. Book clubs will learn to think thematically by first naming the problem that a character faces, then asking, ‘What lessons does the character learn from (that problem)?’ or ‘What might the author want me to know about that problem/issue? Readers will also learn that the best part of reading with others is that it changes you. You end up viewing the text through the eyes of others, and therefore seeing more than you would otherwise have seen.
Read Aloud: We are currently reading, Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate. We are using this book to practice writing about reading as well as identifying themes throughout a book. Be sure to ask your child what themes they are noticing throughout the stories they are reading at school and at home!

Writing: This week in writing, we will remind ourselves of the important question, “How do stories tend to go?” Students will use a story arc to plan and revise their drafts. At the end of the week, we will learn that writers elaborate on important parts of the story to make readers slow down and pay attention to those specific scenes.
Example of a Story Arc from the book Peter’s Chair by Ezra Jack Keats
Math: This week in math, students will use their understanding of place value to read and write numbers using words, standard form, and expanded form with fractions (1/10, 1/100, 1/1,000). Students will also learn to compare and round decimals using place value procedures.
Important Math Words: Exponent, Power, Base, Value, Expanded Form, Thousandths.

Social Studies:This week in Social Studies we will continue to learn that banks and other financial institutions play an important role in the operation of an economy. People and businesses deposit money in banks; buy goods, services, and resources using their bank accounts; borrow money from banks for goods or services they need or want; and earn interest by putting money in savings accounts. Take some time explain credit cards, debit cards, checking accounts, and savings accounts with your 5th grader! Let them in on the importance of managing money responsibly!
Science: This week in science we will continue to observe and compare a variety of organisms. Students will observe the terrariums daily making observations and predictions along the way. We will also begin to learn about organisms, populations, communities, and different types of ecosystems.
