Constitution Day
September 16, 2017
Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by thirty-nine brave men on September 17, 1787, recognizing all who are born in the U.S.
or by naturalization, have become citizens.
Picture Day: Picture Day is right around the corner! Your 5th grader will have their picture taken on Monday September, 25.
Reading: This week in reading, we will continue to work in our Interpretation Book Clubs. Book clubs will continue learning to link ideas together to build larger theories or interpretations. As they think about how ideas might connect, they ask, ‘Could there be a larger truth or lesson here?’ We will also learn to enrich book club conversations by learning to debate an idea appropriately. As readers, we know we all have different viewpoints so defending our ideas with claims, reasons, and evidence will take our interpretation to the next level.
Read Aloud: Home of the Brave, Eleven a short story by Sandra Cisneros
Writing: This week in writing, we will begin the last bend in our Narrative writing unit. The focus of the final bend is learning from Mentor Texts. Students will read and annotate the work of others and ask, “What is the clever trick this writer has done that I can use in my writing?” Students will also learn to not only use their notebooks to collect entries, but as a place to try new things. Lastly, students will think carefully about the structure of their stories. One way they will learn to think about structure is to stretch out the problem, telling it bit by bit.

Math: This week in math, students will continue to work with decimal place value. We are also moving on to adding and subtracting decimals to the hundredths place. This week will conclude unit one in math. The post assessment for this unit will be Friday, September 22. Study material for the test can be found on the Envisions website. Students have been assigned the topic one and topic two unit test as a study tool. We will also be sending home the student’s math book to use as a study tool. Students will study from pages 51-52 and 105-106. See answer to check your child’s work below.
Important Math Words: Exponent, Power, Base, Value, Word Form, Standard Form, Decimal, Expanded Form, Tenths, Hundredths, Thousand

Social Studies:This week in Social Studies, students will review all that they have learned about Financial Literacy and show what they know. Later in the week, we will start the second bend in our unit. Students of JA BizTown will receive the rights and privileges granted to all members of society. They will be able to earn and spend money, open a savings account, go to work, and take a break from working. This will help students understand their place in an economy.
Science: This week in science, students will present their Google Slides presentations on different types of Ecosystems. Ask your 5th grader what Missouri Ecosystem they are an expert on! Later in the week, students will compare their schoolyard ecosystem with pond, forest, and prairie ecosystems.

I asked Sophie last night about the envision practice tests and she had no idea what I was talking about. We went on Pearson but I did not see it. Where do we find these?
ReplyDeleteAmanda, I am so glad you said something! I forgot to assign the unit 1 and unit 2 assessments. I just went in and assigned the assessments on Envision. I will give students some time in class tomorrow to get started. Sophie should be able to access them now. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
