Reading: This week in reading, we will continue reading nonfiction texts. Students will learn about specific strategies that readers use when they encounter texts that teach main ideas implicitly. Students will learn that readers rely on a host of strategies to help them make sense of the increasingly complex vocabulary used by authors of nonfiction texts. Finally, students will study and consider the structure of texts at many levels. They can think about how texts are built at the smallest level--the sentence level-- to how part of a text is built to how the entire text is built.
Writing:  This week in writing, we will learn that researchers shift between reading to collect and record information, and writing to grow ideas. After that, students will learn that as historians write and revise, they need to keep in mind the qualities of good writing as well as the qualities of good history. One of the qualities of good history to keep in mind is the impact that geography has on the ways events unfold. A map is a useful tool. Lastly, we will learn that when writers are researching, they think about the information they are learning and come up with new ideas. One of the ways writers do this is by asking questions and then figuring out answers to those questions.
Math: This week in math, we will dive into Topic 4: Use Models and strategies to Multiply Decimals. We will begin by using our knowledge of place value and patterns to find the product of a decimal number and a power of 10. Then, we will use rounding and compatible numbers to estimate the product of a decimal and a whole number. We will wrap up the week by using models to represent multiplying a decimal and a whole number.
Important Math Words: Exponent, factor, product estimate, decimal, compatible numbers
Social Studies:This week in Social Studies, citizens will prepare for their visit to JA BizTown by working in business teams to learn about key factors in operating a business, such as teamwork, operation costs, pricing, and advertising.
