Hello 5th Grade Families,
I hope that you all had a wonderful weekend! I wanted to say thank you for taking time out of your busy lives to chat with me about your awesome kiddo's. These fifth graders are unique, fun-loving, and kind. Each day, I feel lucky to work with such a wonderful group. Thank you for raising such great little people and for sharing them with me. Here is what’s happening in our classroom this week:
JA Biztown Field Trip: Our Biztown field trip is fast approaching! We will be attending Biztown on Friday, October 20th. Your 5th grader will come home with a permission form tomorrow. Please send their signed form back to school as soon as you can. I will send more updates about the trip next week, but know that you will need to provide a sack lunch for your child day of the trip.
JA Volunteers: Volunteers, first and foremost, thank you for joining us! You will be receiving an email from our JA Biztown Rep, Jessica Kichura, by the end of this week. Her email is jkichura@jastl.org and will give you details about the role you will play the day of the trip. If you do not receive an email from Jessica by next Monday, please let me know. She has asked that I not send out the information separately as it could cause a conflict. I appreciate your patience.
Reading: This week in reading, we will delve into our Tackling Complexity: Moving Up Levels of Nonfiction unit. We will begin the unit by immersing ourselves into the world of nonfiction. Students will learn that when readers orient themselves to complex nonfiction texts, they use text features and their knowledge of the topic to help. We will also explore how as texts grow increasingly complex so does the main idea. Students will wrap up the week by learning to draw on a toolkit of strategies to support them in determining the main ideas.
Writing: This week in writing, we will delve into our The Lens of History: Research Reports unit. In session 1, students will learn that research writers organize the information that they know about their topic, which helps them to write about their topic. In session 2, I will remind students that before writers write, they recall all they know about the kind of writing they are about to do. Finally, we will learn that researchers shift between reading to collect and record information, and writing to grow ideas. When reflecting, researchers think, talk, and jot about patterns, surprises, and points of comparison or contrast, and they entertain questions.
Math: This week in math, we will work to solve word problems involving multiplication. We will use the UPScheck strategy to help us think deeply about story problems. Look at the chart below for more information. Students will also learn to critique the reasoning of others by using what they know about estimating products. Lastly, students will show what they know about multiplying 3-digit by 2-digit problems on Thursday.
Important Math Words: Underestimate, Overestimate, partial products, array method, standard algorithm
Social Studies:This week in Social Studies, students will learn about job readiness. We will discuss why it is important to consider your interests and skills when deciding on a job for the future. Students will also learn about different career types. Lastly, will learn the importance of teamwork in the workforce and practice creating a job resume.
