Reading: This week in reading we are continuing our Argument and Advocacy unit.  We are going to be studying perspective.  It is important for readers to figure out an author's perspective to understand how his or her ideas fit into the issue.  In addition, we are going to consider the way author's craft their writing pieces by analyzing the organization and word choice.  We will also discuss how readers need to be skeptical of what they read and evaluate writing carefully to determine if it seems valid.

Writing:  This week in writing we will bring a critical perspective to writing by critically reading.  While we read, we are evaluating evidence in order to make our arguments solid.  Also, we are going to add new vocabulary by focusing on rebuttals and counterclaims.  We will discuss the importance of adding evidence supporting the opposing viewpoint and then offering a rebuttal.

Math:  This week in math, we will be continuing to study mixed numbers.  We will be focusing on how to add and subtract mixed numbers.  Sometimes we need to regroup numbers to make it easier to subtract mixed numbers.  We will spend time analyzing key words or phrases to help us determine which operation(s) we need to use in order to solve a real world math problem correctly.

Social Studies: This week we will continue our Discovery, Exploration and Early Settlement unit.  We will begin Chapter 5 where we will study famous explorers who helped discover America.  Students will be assigned explorers to research and share out their learning to the rest of the class.

Science: Students will get their Levers and Pulleys tests back this week.  Towards the end of the week they will begin their next unit titled, Mixtures and Solutions with Miss Epstein.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  Have a wonderful week!

Thank you,

Emily Kohut
